A little before the 1850’s, tens of thousands of Czech immigrants traveled from Bohemia, Moravia, and Austrian Silesia to settle in Texas through the port of Galveston. Apart from rich culture, they brought many different types of foods, one of which was koláče, also known as kolache. These soft, delicious desserts, which originated as a traditional wedding gift in the Czech culture, can be defined as a warm, slightly sweet pastry, traditionally filled with fruit. Kolache, has been through many adaptations throughout the years. Whether the kolache is sweet, savory, or a blend of both, Texas is home to the largest population of Czech-Americans in the United States, where the traditional recipes and culture are still around. Today, there are dozens of cities throughout the country that hold annual Kolache Festival celebrations. We’re excited to celebrate it more on a National forefront and giving Kolache it’s very own special day to pay homage to the Czech immigrants that introduced us to this sweet pastry concoction!
